Two New Colleagues in South Africa

Martin Thursby and Mphuthumi Mayekiso are both 41 years old and they have both recently started working for Intervolve in East London, South Africa. They both introduce themselves:

Martin says: I was born and raised in Bristol (United Kingdome) and now living in Abbotsford in East London (South Africa). I am the new Project Manager at our Intervolve office in East London. By training I am a Civil Engineer who has moved across into the housing and infrastructure field of work. I went to college at Sheffield City Polytechnic in the UK where I obtained by Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Civil Engineering.  In the UK I worked for various companies, mainly in the water and wastewater fields. I moved to Gibb UK civil engineering consultants who transferred me to South Africa in 1998 where I worked for their sister company, Arcus Gibb consulting engineers on housing and township infrastructure  projects in the formal Transkei areas near to East London. Upon leaving Arcus Gibb in 2001, I moved to the housing department at Buffalo City Municipality where I was responsible for low income housing projects in and around the township Mdantsane. After a successful six years at the Municipality I felt it was time to move out and broaden my experience in the areas of housing and social development.
My position of Intervolve is that of Project Manager where I am responsible for the technical implementation of the
various housing and other construction projects such as a new residential block at the Youth and Children’s care centre in King Williams Town and the development of 27 affordable housing units at Haven Hills South.
I will also be involved in the development of alterative building methods and materials such as our Compressed Earth
Block project and the construction of housing units using expanded polystyrene. I will also be providing technical assistance to the Programme Manager.

Mphuthumi tells us that he is born in Keiskammahoek in the former Ciskei areas of the Eastern Cape. I did tertiary education in the University of the Western Cape doing Business Administration Degree, majoring in Public Administration and Political Science. After completing the first degree I worked for an NGO called the Trust for Community Outreach and Education in Cape Town and Grahamstown as a Land Access and Use co-ordinator until June 2005. In 2006 I worked for N & G Development Cosultants as the Training Officer, and in 2007 worked for the Eastern NGO Coalition as a Provincial Capacity Building Officer. I joined Intervolve Foundation for Innovative Integrated Development in July 2008 as a Community Development Manager. I hope my experience and qualifications will add value to Intervolve. My motto is “Balancing Theory and Practice” is the best teacher.
