25-03-2010 More blue on the streets
At the WUF fair a larger number of NGO's, government organisations, funding agencies, resident associations and educational institutions are present. A nice place to make new contacts and get new ideas. At the German stand was a short presentation about a study on urban safety in Nairobi, Johannesburg and Douala. It appears that Douala is the most unsafe city of Cameroon, but the use of vigilance committees of local residents contribute to the safety in the urban areas. It also shows that improving infrastructure and facilities has a positive effect. For us this is useful information from an enthusiastic Cameroonian researcher; perhaps Intervolve can use it in future implementation of its programme in Sopom. Meanwhile UN Habitat gave the kickoff for the World Urban Campaign www.unhabitat.org/wuc: an network of urban partners who jointly strive to finding, offering and sharing solutions for the problems of rapid world wide urbanisation. For the WUF motto seems to be: We must work together. Let us hope that within 2 years time clear results can be presented.
